Blog Commenting :- Don’t Become Your Own Worst Enemy

by Clive O' Hagan on February 4, 2011 · 13 comments

Hi Everyone, I am so sick and tired of rejecting useless Blog Comments that I just wanted give the benefit of the doubt to some of you out there who obviously do not know what you are doing when it comes to blog commenting and give some quality tips and advice for individuals who may have an interest in backlinks and making an impact online.

If You Want to Improve your Acceptance of Backlinks from Blog Commenting Skip this at Your Peril

Firstly Blog Commenting is no art form, no science and is certainly not difficult to do, nor is it difficult to achieve some quality solid backlinks to your blog or website from the use of commenting on other blogs. Yet people on the four corners of the globe make a complete dog’s dinner of this one simple exercise by doing the wrong thing over and over again.

Quote:-

“The definition of an idiot is someone who continues to do the same thing and expecting different results!”

Getting one way quality backlinks from blog commenting is one of the easiest and one of the most effective ways in Internet Marketing to achieve common goals but it must be tackled correctly. If you are serious about your online business and want to increase your rank blog commenting is a very effective tool in your armory.

Right so, this is what you need to be doing and if you are not doing it, STOP doing whatever it is you are doing because it is not working.

You need to find blogs that is in your area of comfort. What I mean is that you would be comfortable commenting on the subject matter within the blog or post. Forget about finding blogs in your niche only, this is not necessary contrary to popular belief, although this is good if you can and they are relevant. All you need to do is read the article or post understand what the writer is trying to talk about and make a comment based on opinion or knowledge of the subject, that’s it!  The key here is to understand what the subject is about you are commenting on and try to provide some value to the post by asking a question, giving an opinion or providing a new piece of information that will add to the discussion.

This in a nutshell is the only strategy that will nearly always guarantee you a link from the blog you are commenting on and will gain you a potential future friend if nurtured. What you should not do is come on to any blog and say “Hey love the blog where did you get the template I’m thinking of getting one” or “That post was so inspiring I just had to comment and say well done” or other crappy non sense comments which will only serve to piss off the blog owner and even if you cop yourself on later on it may be the case you never get a comment on the blogs you left bad comments on.

You should try to nurture blog comments and become a regular contributor to others blogs, try to gain the trust and respect of the blog owner and you could be looking at guest posting and getting even greater benefit from the blog n question.

This has been a very quick overview of blog commenting and I have purposely left out some details and other advice to perhaps stimulate sensible commenting or questions. This has been about blog commenting and there are zillions of other ways to achieve backlinks to your site or blog which I will cover in other posts. Please sign up to my blog or send me an email if there is any particular area of interest which I may be able to help you.

Get Commenting!! The right way.

Hey Clive,

Great post and I’m very much on your side here when it comes to sad silly comments being left with the hope to getting free backlinks…

I’ve personally lost count of the amount of spammers that have posted pathetic comments on my blog with the hope of getting a free link back to there page/site/blog…

It just ain’t gonna happen! Not on my watch anyway. :)

I for one check every single comment on my blog personally and if I even get a whiff of a spammer it’s deleted.

I’m pretty positive that 99 percent of the comments you are referring to are submitted by some silly blog commenting software that the users don’t realize, don’t work!

But if there are bloggers out there that post these grim comments on blogs, listen to what Clive is saying here… He’s 100 percent giving you great advice here.

Onwards and Upwards,
Robert :)

Hey Clive…

Totally hear what you are saying. I’m just thankful for the Askimet Plug-in. I’d dread to think how long it would take to manually trash the spam comments I get each day.

Hi Kerry,

Thanks for your comment and as for Askimet plug in. I actually do not use it as i hasd a lot of manual work to do with it. I now use WP-Spam Free which is totally hands off and does a great job. I actully don’t know where I saw it recommended but it was a fellow blogger who had some issues with Askimet, so I changed over and never looked back.

Rgards,

Clive.

Interesting Post Clive and even more interesting as I have come to your site because I was doing a bit of sleuthing on comments left on my blog at http://sagaciousnews.com. In fact you had left a comment on my blog a while back and I had approved it as it had some relevance to the topic and at some level spoke with a hint of sincerity. However I did pick yours out to investigate because something about it wasn’t quite right. Now don’t get me wrong, I think your tactic is spot on and this is why I am commenting on it but maybe there is a bit more that can be done to be approved and stay approved. One suggestion would be to post another comment responding to the reply – should you get one. That would have solidified the interaction with me and I would not have questioned the sincerity of the original post. Maybe we could collaborate on this a bit more and do some guest posting on each others blogs. Let me know your thoughts.

Hi Todd,

I am glad you found me again because frankly I lost your site. I found your blog post on Google whilst searching for information on making a static site from WordPress and to be honest I thought what you posted was very clear and exactly what I was looking for. I have emailed you back and will be in touch as I need some advice in the future.

Hi Clive, love the blog and post…………. OK OK you got me

Clive, my ol’ friend, you’ve hit the nail on the head here mate.

I use Akismet to filter the spam comments but on occasion the odd one gets through. This is where we need to train our eye: If the comment doesn’t mention any detail of the post its being left for it is spam! I approve every comment manually and if the comment could relate to any post on any blog it is marked as spam.

In the post you stated that you left out some of the benefits of commenting Clive, to see if any of us would state some……. here’s one mate:

Whilst commenting does generate backlinks, which does improve our rankings. But if we leave quality comments then future readers may like what we write and want to visit our sites to get more interesting info from us.

When i check my traffic stats I always check the reffering sites and more times than not I find that it was the quality of my comment that got me the visits.

Comments like the one i started with are not comments: Loved your site…… Loved your post…….. are all crap! and people trying to leave them can Kiss my R Send if you think I’m approving that type of comment, don’t waste your time or mine trying to submit them, they will only result in  which will be followed by you

Clive you’ve written a great post that I hope people take note of. I notice that you haven’t been around for a while mate, I hope everything is ok.

Catch up soon mate, keep this kind of post coming.

Respect and Regards, Barry

Hi Mate,

Thanks for that I will check it out. I noticed that before. Perhaps I will try reinstalling the plugin again and see what happens.

Now everyone take note here, this is how a 10/10 comment should be. Barry actually read the post, thought about a sensible reply and made it into a very, very good comment, in fact worthy of a post this is Barry! :)

Thanks very much for the great comment and you are right, I have not been around as much as I would like to be. To be honest I have been tied up with several projects and have not had the time to put into my blog. I am going to free up some time so I can get back to documenting some of the fantastic new stuff I am using and whats working at the moment for me and others I am in contact with. Please feel free to drop in anytime and give me a shout if you ever want a chat.

Regards,

Clive

Hi Clive, very valuable information here. I am wondering what you meant about Akismet needing lots of attention in your comment above. I use Akismet and never touch a thing.

I completely agree about not only commenting in your niche. People will read your comments on other blogs and they may click through to see what you have to offer.

Enjoy the journey.

Hi Mandy,

Thanks for the comment. I don’ have a problem with Askimet, in fact its a good plugin but I have found in my case anyway a few rogue comments got in. I have found that WP Spam free does not have these issues and its pretty solid.

Barry Wells June 1, 2011 at 08:12

Hi Clive, hope you’re well mate.

I’ve come across another plugin called GASP, which adds a check box beneath our comments area that people have to check to submit their comments. Spam bots can’t do this so it cuts our spam down to a minimum. In fact since installing it I’ve only had a couple each day.

Best of luck with all your projects.

I’ve forgotten to email my number so will do that now mate.

Speak soon, Barry
